Ukrainian children have shown the world incredible resilience

But resilience is not a superpower Ukrainian children are born with. It’s a necessity.

This year, children across Ukraine will endure their fifth consecutive winter of prolonged blackouts, air raids and disrupted education.

In freezing temperatures. For months.

Our Ukrainian pupils are remarkably resilient. It’s admirable, humbling and inspiring. But resilience has its limits - it can't provide light, power, warmth or connection.

Our extraordinary pupils have utterly ordinary needs. Donate now to help Ukrainian children learn, keep warm, stay connected and feel safer this winter.

“In my city, due to shelling, electricity is only provided for 3–4 hours a day. It is very important for me to be able to write and call my dad, who is currently at the front. When I am in touch with him, I feel calmer and warmer in my soul.”

£200 · A full winter kit

Light, power, warmth and connection all winter, based on what each child asks for.

Please Donate Now

Why is a full kit £200, not £250? Most Ukrainian families already have at least 1–2 of these items, and only request what they need.

We appreciate times are hard for many people this winter. A donation of even £5 could help us with packaging and delivery costs in Ukraine.

The limits of resilience

Our pupils in Ukraine have had to develop a level of resilience no child should ever need.

They’re woken by air raid sirens at 2am then go to school in the morning. They show up for online lessons during blackouts, in dark rooms with a blanket. They retain optimism, humour and curiosity despite their circumstances.

But resilience has its limits. It doesn’t provide light, power, warmth or connection.

XXXX

Resilience doesn’t:

Light up a child’s bedroom

Power a reading lamp

Charge a laptop for online lessons

Send a goodnight text to dad at the front

Warm cold skin or keep soup hot

Distract from boredom during an 8-hour blackout

Winter Appeal 2025

Last winter we delivered to 144 students. Help us support even more Ukrainian children this winter.

In winter 2025 your generous support provided rechargeable light and power products for 144 students in Ukraine.

This year, we want to do even more. Children need light and power, but warmth and connection are just as important. Help us ensure that this winter, our students can keep learning, keep warm, stay connected to family and classmates and keep darkness at bay.

“I can’t find the words to express my gratitude to Svitlo School and Svitlo Santa. You are not only a warm, welcoming school, but a team that truly cares about its students.”

“We were absolutely overwhelmed by the gifts from our beloved Svitlo School. It meant so much to feel that we matter to someone beyond our parents. We will keep your cards to always remember your kindness. Thank you, Svitlo, a million times.”

Frequently asked questions

What is Svitlo School?

We are a UK registered charity and we run a free, extracurricular online school in English for Ukrainian children affected by the war. Our pupils are 10–18 years old and we have supported more than 4,000 children since 2022.

Svitlo pupils can choose from more than 50 lessons each week, taught in English by native English speakers who are volunteers from all over the world. We also provide scholarships, fully-funded summer camps in the UK and Europe, and books and equipment to Ukrainian children and school bomb shelters.

Who are the children benefitting from this appeal?

Our pupils are Ukrainian children aged 10–18. The vast majority – 80% – are still living in Ukraine, with the rest living as refugees in host nations including Turkey, Germany and Poland.

Many of our students in Ukraine have been displaced from the communities where they grew up to safer parts of the country. Some of our students are in frontline regions.

How do you collect donations, and how will my donation be used?

Svitlo School will use 100% of donations received through the Winter Appeal to fund products and delivery.

We use JustGiving to collect donations securely. JustGiving charges 0% to charities to use its platform, but payment providers take a small fee for card transactions: 1.9% + 30p in the UK. JustGiving pays the transaction fee, then gives the remainder to Svitlo School.

You have the option to boost your donation if you would like to cover processing fees, but it is not a requirement.

Will my donation pay for the exact kit I choose?

Our kits are needs-led: pupils and their families request only the items they need. Your donation goes into our Winter Appeal fund and is spent on the items our students request, so the kits on this page show what your donation could provide.

Where are the Winter Essentials Kit items sourced?

All products are sourced within Ukraine. We have sourced a number of Ukrainian businesses with good availability and excellent reviews. This not only supports local economies in Ukraine but ensures speedy, cost-effective delivery and a limited carbon footprint.

How are the products delivered to Svitlo pupils?

Our Ukraine-based staff purchase and arrange tracked delivery of each kit. All receipts and records are securely stored for transparency.

When will children receive their kits?

We will start sending kits out in batches as soon as possible, and continue until February or for as long as funds last. This helps ensure children receive their kits during the winter months, when blackouts are felt most severely.

Are the products safe and reliable?

Yes. Each product meets regulatory standards and has been chosen for safety and quality. The power bank can recharge a laptop and other devices at the same time, and the lamps, reading lights and fairy lights are low-voltage.

Can I send products instead of donating?

As an online charity and school, we do not have storage capacity to hold products, and we would not share address details for our students or staff, so sending products directly is not possible. Our staff in Ukraine purchase products from Ukrainian businesses and arrange delivery directly to students and their families.

Can I donate on behalf of someone else?

Yes. You can dedicate your donation to someone special on our JustGiving page.

How can businesses or groups get involved?

If you run a business, social group or school and would like to be involved, you can sponsor multiple Winter Essentials Kits or promote the appeal within your networks. We would be delighted to work with you and support you with any materials you might need. We can highlight support from businesses and groups in appeal updates and on our website. Please contact marketing@svitloschool.com to start a conversation.

How else can I support the appeal?

There are lots of ways to help beyond donating:

  • Follow us on social media, including Instagram @SvitloEducation
  • Volunteer with us, from just one hour per week
  • Make an introduction to your company or organisation
  • Fundraise as a business, school, team or family
