Mr. Francis Malige is a key leader at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, responsible for overseeing the Bank’s Financial Institutions Business Group. Since 2018, he has been directing investments with banks, insurance companies, non-bank financial institutions, and capital market infrastructure across 42 economies on three continents.
Experience and Key Achievements
• Led the EBRD’s financial-sector response to both the COVID-19 crisis and the war on Ukraine.
• Joined the EBRD in 2010 as Director of Financial Institutions, covering Eastern Europe, the Western Balkans, Turkey, and the Southern & Eastern Mediterranean region.
• Served as Managing Director for Eastern Europe and the Caucasus from 2014 to 2018, overseeing Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, and pioneering major policy initiatives across the region.
Contribution to Ukraine
Mr. Malige played a pivotal role during Ukraine’s challenging post-revolution period. Under his leadership, the EBRD advanced projects that combined investment with strong policy impact, including: state-owned enterprise reform, transformation of the banking sector, development of the Ukraine Reforms Architecture.
At the request of the President of Ukraine, he also served as a member of the Supervisory Board of PrivatBank following its nationalisation.
International Career
Before joining the EBRD, Mr. Malige was Managing Director for Corporate Development at BNP Paribas, focusing on bank acquisitions. His earlier career included positions at Arthur Andersen and McKinsey & Company, where he advised clients in industry, high tech, construction, and financial services.
Education and Public Engagement
Mr. Malige is a graduate of ESCP Europe, a leading French business school. He frequently contributes to major European publications on topics related to finance and emerging markets.
He is a native French speaker and is fluent in German, Italian, and English.
