Svitlo School’s First Alumni Camp  

This summer, a group of remarkable young Ukrainians came together in London for an experience that was nothing short of empowering. The Svitlo Alumni Camp wasn’t just a summer programme – it was a chance for students whose education and opportunities have been deeply disrupted by the war to find hope, purpose, and a vision for the future.  

These young students are the future of Ukraine. Yet today, many of them face enormous uncertainty: our latest survey showed that 64% of older Svitlo students (14-18 year olds) worry about whether they will be able to access higher education or secure employment. The camp was designed as the first step to meet that challenge head-on.   

Academic Growth  

At the heart of the Alumni Camp was a commitment to strengthening students’ academic pathways. Students took part in workshops led by dedicated volunteers, where they developed core pedagogical skills for teaching English as an Additional Language. These sessions offered more than just training, they provided a foundation for an internationally recognized qualification creating real academic opportunities that students can carry forward into their studies and careers. The skills they learnt are now being extended and put into practice online via our Language and Leadership Programme. 

Afternoons extended this growth beyond the classroom. Visits to global organisations such as Bloomberg, LinkedIn, EBRD, Foresight Investment Group, Gensler and others gave students the rare chance to see how knowledge translates into action. Through talks, mentorship, and workshops, they discovered how academic subjects connect directly with professional practice at the highest level.  

Visiting universities in London gave students a first-hand glimpse into world-class academic environments. By exploring departments, facilities and study options, the students could see how their own academic interests might translate into specific courses and degrees. The energy and opportunities of campus life sparked fresh motivation and inspiration.

Evenings and weekends complemented this academic journey with cultural exploration. Museums, landmarks, and historical sites enriched their understanding of global history and society, adding depth to their education and expanding their perspectives beyond what traditional classrooms can offer.  

The highlight of the social programme was attending The Great Gatsby musical as the group of pupils studies the book in their English Literature lessons in the previous term at Svitlo School and particularly enjoyed seeing the plot acted out at the West End.

‍Personal Development  

‍Equally important was the personal development that unfolded throughout the camp. The morning workshops were not only about teaching skills, they also built confidence, leadership, and communication. By stepping into the role of future educators, students learned to value their own voices and abilities.  

The professional site visits challenged them to think bigger about their futures. Interacting with mentors, asking questions, and seeing diverse careers inspiring a new sense of ambition. Many began to picture themselves in roles and industries they may have never considered.  

Cultural outings added another layer of growth. Absorbing London’s history, diversity and international spirit fostered independence, adaptability, and curiosity. These shared experiences also strengthened connections between students, creating a supportive community of peers who will continue to inspire each other long after the camp.  

‍More Than A Camp  

The Svitlo Alumni Camp was about more than training or career development. It was about instilling confidence, building community, and nurturing hope. It was about giving young people the tools and courage to imagine themselves as leaders, innovators, and changemakers for Ukraine’s future.
